Matthew McGrory, Karl in ‘Big Fish,’ dead at 32

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matthew McGrory, the deep-voiced 7-foot-plus actor who moved from appearances on Howard Stern’s radio show to a high-profile role as a gentle giant in Big Fish, has died. He was 32.

Matthew McGrory played gentle giant, Karl, in Tim Burton’s 2003 movie, Big Fish. He also had roles in Bubble Boy and Men In Black II.

McGrory died Tuesday at his home in the Sherman Oaks section of Los Angeles, said director Drew Sky, who was working with him on his current movie, a biopic of wrestler-turned-actor Andre the Giant.

Paramedics determined he died of apparent natural causes, police said in a statement.

John Mayer’s Songwriting Contest

Cool Contest RD showed me 🙂

Esquire:Feature Story:The Giveaway: John Mayer’s Songwriting Contest: “The Giveaway: John Mayer’s Songwriting Contest

While working on his new album, the Grammy winner offers up a handful of lyrics swimming around his head and asks you to do the rest.

By John Mayer

One of the most natural (and absolutely maddening) facets of creating music is that the product is constantly being refined. What you thought was a brilliant song title yesterday is probably just good enough to be a passing lyric in the third verse. That chorus you lost sleep over? Turns out the chords work perfectly in the bridge of that other tune you’ve been trying to finish for eight months.

I’ve never experienced anything like the recording process involved in making Continuum, my third-album-to-be. The songs continually beg for more work when they fall short of being great. I had been working on a very trance-inducing two-chord tune when I wrote the lyrics below. As it turned out, the song didn’t need lyrics at all. Looking to make some use of the time and emotion I spent writing them, I’ve decided to share a few random excerpts with you here:

I keep a note that I wrote on a taxi receipt

It says, Don’t listen to anybody other than me

I hit the big time for a nominal fee

You lose a friend in the end for every dream that you see come true

I got scars upon scrapes, I’ve got bruises on breaks

Masochistically committed to see how much of this I’ll take

Three years under water, and I ain’t even got the shakes

I’m going deeper and deeper and deeper

I’ve got dreams to remember, I’ve got days to forget

I’ve got some phone calls in to God but he ain’t called me back just yet

I’m still not done with these lyrics. But I don’t want to let them sit idly on my mind’s shelf. So here’s my offer: I’m inviting all aspiring songwriters to write their own chords and melodies around my lyrics. Go ahead, I’m not using them. You can tell people that we wrote a song together. I want to hear what you come up with, so send a CD of your song to the address listed below. The best submissions will be featured here on Esquire.com, and I’ll announce my favorite in an upcoming issue. But don’t be surprised if these words end up in some other song I’ve yet to write. Until they wrap my album in cellophane, anything can happen.

Tomorrow Lil Nick will be 1 Month Old! Happy Birthday lil man!

MLB – World Baseball Classic

Jos’s department had a huge press conference on Monday announcing the World Baseball Classic, a 18 day event during next season’s spring training! I saw the press conference on the internet and the hype has begun! This years All Star Game had many International themes to promote the event and I will be following it next year!
DETROIT — All the world is a stage. Next year, Major League Baseball will be at the center of it.

For the first time, Major League players will be eligible to compete in international play when the inaugural World Baseball Classic opens its 18-day run next March 3. 2005 All-Star Game, The Day After

Well another All Star Game has gone and went. Again I curse the damn National League and their lack of winning the past 9 years! Yeah there was some excitement, but it came way too late! Unfortunately, as soon as you forget about the loss, you are reminded with the slap in the face come World Series that your favorite League doesn’t have that all important home field advantage! What I did get out of it was the enjoyment of learning about Detroit. Yes, I will probably never go there for the rest of my life, but it is always fun seeing and discovering a new ballpark, especially a fairly brand new one like Comerica Park, home of the Tigers. Seeing the cool Tigers, waterfalls and carousels were pretty cool, even if it was on TV 🙂 I knew Miguel Tejada was going to be the MVP with his home run right off the bat! He seemed to be a really sincere guy and a great player. All in all it was great experiencing another All Star Game, even in the comfort of our home!

Major League Baseball – 2005 All-Star Game

THIS TIME IT COUNTS… AGAIN! Yeah baby! It’s that time again this year for the 2005 All Star Game! 1/2 way through the season this lil break is an awesome time to sit back and watch the All Stars go at it! Hopefully it will be a close game this year! Last year, at the game in Houston, it was very frustrating to see Clemons chock the way he did! Go National League! Check out mlb.com, the site during the All Star Game week is GREAT!

2005 All-Star Game – Home Run Derby

This years Home Run Derby was AWESOME! I really do love the event and theres nothing in the world like living it! It was almost as fun at home with Jos, Nicholas, Mamma and Frank seeing Bobby Abreu break the record for most home runs in a round first up was a great experience! It is also great to see the home town player, Pge Rodriguez kick ass and come in second!

Phillies All-Star Bobby Abreu smacked a record 41 taters to win the 2005 CENTURY 21 Home Run Derby on Monday night at Detroit’s Comerica Park. The Venezuelan had a first round for the ages, pounding 24 dingers — shattering the single-round record of 15 hit by defending champion Miguel Tejada in Houston last year.

Disneyland’s NEW Space Mountain

For more than two years, one of Disneyland park’s most beloved and thrilling attractions has been under wraps. Hopeful space pilgrims would make the trek to Space Mountain, only to find the doors to Disneyland park’s space station closed to the public for renovation.

At long last, on July 15, 2005, Space Mountain will reopen to transport travelers to the outer reaches of the galaxy. Will it be worth the wait? The Insider sat down and got the scoop from Imagineer Chrissie Allen, who worked on the refurbish – and who has personally embarked on dozens of test flights… on the attraction. She let us in on everything that’s new, improved, and out of this world about Space Mountain.

Most of us who had ridden it thought Space Mountain was pretty cool to begin with, so why improve on a good thing? According to Chrissie, it was time for a facelift for the attraction, which was nearly 25 years old (Space Mountain first opened at Disneyland park in 1977).

The improvements at Space Mountain have gone far beyond sprucing it up. Chrissie tells us, “There are all kinds of changes, from the front door to the exit.” When Guests arrive for their journey into space, they’re now greeted by a brand-new mezzanine with new plantings and a landing strip. The changes aren’t just pretty; they help the attraction tell a new and exciting story, she explains. “We’re calling it Space Station ’77, in homage to the opening year. At the front door, there’s a graphic that shows what Space Station ’77 looks like from outer space, and it’s really a cool image. The corridors have been completely redone. We’re trying to say that you’re entering the space station, and when you get on the ride you’ll know when you’re in the launch sequence, you’ll know when you’re in space, and you’ll know when you return.”

Blast off on the newly refurbished Space Mountain! Because the story is such an important part of the experience, in the new Space Mountain (unlike the old experience) FASTPASS and stand-by Guests use the same entrance, so they can be immersed in the same atmosphere from the very beginning.

That atmosphere continues inside. “All of the corridors are brand new. There’s new art, new graphics, a new safety video, and then you enter the spaceport. We’ve done some pretty cool stuff there. We took the old CMB300 space probe, and it looks like a new ship has returned in its place,” Chrissie reveals. “The main room still has a kind of ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ look, but the space probe has undergone a great transformation. And the status board where they used to keep track of the launches has now become a beautiful window into outer space. It shows some footage of what looks like the planet Mars, and when you look up to this window, you get the feeling the station is rotating around this planet, and you see nebulae and meteorites and stuff going around. If you kind of lock in on it, it makes you feel like maybe the space station is rotating. It’s kind of a neat feature.”

One change to Space Mountain was actually part of the original plans for the attraction, but simply couldn’t be implemented with the resources available in 1977. “In the final launch tunnel, they wanted that tunnel to mechanically rotate. It’s very hard to do, because it’s about 90 feet of mechanical tunnel, rotating with a live ride track in the center,” Chrissie explains. “Now the designers at Walt Disney’s Imagineering unique Research and Development group have created a rotating tunnel using special effects. And everyone who’s been on it so far – some people think the tunnel IS mechanically rotating, but it’s all done with what we call ‘illusioneering’ – it’s a special effect that just makes it appear the tunnel is rotating.”

The attraction vehicles are also all new, and include state-of-the-art onboard audio systems – each vehicle holds a whopping 42 speakers! This ensures that the new soundtrack to your interstellar adventure (composed by Michael Giacchino, who scored “The Incredibles”) is heard to its best advantage. Chrissie tells us that the music has been carefully orchestrated to heighten the emotions Guests feel on their “joy ride through space” – including nervousness as they ascend through the final launch tunnel before rocketing off into the dark.

And that dark has never been darker. Although it’s not as high tech as the “window” into outer space or the revamped attraction vehicles, one of the most impressive changes at Space Mountain is the way the Imagineers send travelers hurtling through total darkness. “When you’re flying through the star field and the nebulas, you really can’t see what’s coming. The track and everything has disappeared,” says Chrissie proudly. How did they do this? “It’s magic!” she laughs. “We made dark, darker. We did it with black and black interior finishes. We closed up all the light leaks – doors and frames that let light in from the outside. I ride it a couple of times a day and I’m always amazed at how dark it is.”

Come July 15, we’ll all get the chance to share that experience, including some surprises Chrissie refused to ruin. Nerves of steel are optional, but the spirit of adventure is strictly required!

Coors Light Billboard 2005

MCBJ, Brenna, Liz, Rosa, Melissa and Stephine

I was lucky enough to be ask to create and shoot this years Coors Light Billboard! It was my 6th billboard I created, (4th one for Coors Light) and I think it is the best one to date! With the help of Jacqui helping out with the concept and my AMAZING KICK ASS graphic designer Chris, the billboard came out AWESOME! As usual it was pretty cold when we shot the girls 2 months ago but the shoot came out really nice! We also incorporated Coors Light’s MC BJ who does an awesome job MC’ing out at a lot of the Coors events!

Jon Bon Jovi CD Listening Party

Matt, JBJ, Vinnie

It was a great day at Elements the lounge, where I photographed a listening party for Bon Jovi’s new untitled CD that comes out September 20th 2005. The CD is really good and pretty much follows the same formula as the past two studio CD’s Crush and Bounce.

Jon Bon Jovi came in and did a hour and a half Q & A and it was a lot of fun. I enjoy listening to him talking about the history of Bon Jovi and where they are heading. It was very informative and I had a great time.

After the Q & A I did a photo shoot with about 300 fans upstairs in the VIP room of Elements. Elements if you have not been there, is an awesome club and you should defiantly check it out this summer! There is another listening party in July and I believe I will be covering that one as well 🙂

Made It Big Time On The Painted Gleny Short Bus!

I have know Gleny for quite some time now, it’s prob been over 2 years! I met him one night at the Headliner! He shares the same passion as I do and that is photography! Gleny is the king of the Jersey shore when it comes to having fun and taking your picture. All in the name of fun and its a real good time.

Over the years, Gleny has had a few unique automobile projects to add to his fun. Gleny likes to have amazing looking vehicles when he participates in parades or events to get the word out about his website and to bring everyone more fun. Part of his tradition is to paint whatever vehicle is in use.

He recently obtained a “short bus” and this one is the best one yet! Part of the painting is a collection of all of his posse’ and I am honored to be in on the cast of characters this time!

I have checked out the bus myself already and it is REALLY AWESOME! Thanks Gleny and Mesha and I am happy to be on the short bus!

Philadelphia Phillies – Citizens Bank Park

Well, we finally made it out to the almost brand spanking new Philadelphia Phillies new Citizens Bank Park. Everyone who know me knows I am a sucker for a new ballpark and this one was awesome! There is no baseball experience better then attending a game at one of these new MEGA ballparks! It is really nice to just walking and only walk down like 20 steps to get to your seat! You can also catch all the action while u get up and walk around, or if you are in a line. The Phillies played the Barry Bondless Giants and beat them 6 – 5 in a great game! The entire Philly complex is really sweet. I have not been there in a long time and it has totally changed! I can’t wait to go to an Eagles game too! That stadium looks awesome as well!

G5 & RobFuz’s PlayStation Portable – PSP

Wow! What a week! First as my bud Chris puts it, I have turned to the dark side! Getting my Mac G5 that is hehe I really do love it and after “Pimping my G5” by adding the Airport Extreme Wireless Card, Bluetooth and adding The latest OS 10 Operating system Tiger all loaded, it is really making me want to convert! I still like a lot of things on the PC better and some of the substitutes on the Mac I was not as impressed with. It is really like starting over in some respects, learning a whole new operating system and computer. Trying to figure out, what is what and having that mystery and trying to figure basics again for the first time is a really weird feeling. I think once I get a lot of it down i will get a better feel for the Mac.

Just when you thought it was safe, I finally got my PSP! Holy crap, I played Chris’s and Rory’s but now I have a portable system to call my own. Granted, I did get a Nintendo DS over the holiday season, but unfortunately I did not really have any interest in any of the DS games out there and even resorted to buying some Game Boy Advance games instead.

I got to play a lil bit so far with my system and it really does live up to all the hype! I got 3 games for it already, ATV Off-road Furry Blazin’ Trails which is a really cool ATV racing game. I never heard of it before and I tried it first and it is a fun game. Next I tried Wipeout Pure, a game I had planned on getting all along, just for the simple fact you can hack the PSP and go online with it and surf the web! I looked into it and it kind of seems like a real pain in the ass, so I will put that challenge on hold for a bit. This is also a racing game, where you are racing ships in the future. It kind of reminds me of Star Wars Pod Racer and is another good racing game. Last but defiantly not least was Twisted Metal Head On. This game really rocks and is defiantly my favorite of the three! It is really demented and is a fun game to just pick up and play. It is defiantly as good as the old PS1 version I played years back!

I also tried a few other things on the PSP like photos and music files and it really is an impressive portable media center. They give u a measly 32 meg card, so there’s not much u can do with it, so plan on spending some bucks on getting a 1 gig stick to really hold the music, pod casts, saved games and video I plan on storing on it. I was a lil disappointed how smudgy and dirty it gets as soon as you make contact with it. Will these companies EVER learn 🙂 I will check back soon on more of my gadgets! I am off to Philly tomorrow to a Philley’s game at their new stadium! I can not wait!

APPLE MAC G5!

Well mark the calendar! YES i got another new computer! I finally took the plunge and got a Apple Mac G5 with OS X. I also installed Tiger (their almost yearly operating system update) and it is AWESOME! Such a fresh breath of air! It really is nice and I will keep you updated with all the latest news with my G5 🙂 Now all I got to do is learn how to use this thing!
